Snake Eyes

Director: Brian De Palma
Year Released: 1998
Rating: 2.5

Spastic (and gleefully unethical) homicide detective Rick Santoro (Nicolas Cage) intends on watching a heavyweight bout at the Atlantic City Arena with his friend Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise), a commander in the Navy, when the Secretary of Defense (Joel Fabiani), who's also in attendance, is killed by a sniper during the fight and Santoro has to piece together what happened and find out what a mysterious woman named Julia Costello (Carla Gugino) has to do with it.  The stylistic choices made here, from the opening Steadicam shot to the cameras sneaking around walls or looming overhead (not to mention the flashbacks that are shown using first person perspective), seem to get all the attention ... which makes sense because the story itself (written by David Koepp) is completely preposterous and only gets more ridiculous the longer it continues (try not to think logically about any of it).  De Palma seems to have found a kindred spirit in Cage, however, since Nic's beyond human energy contrasts nicely with the technical presentation ... and let's face it: both gentlemen have been a part of features that are far less tolerable than this.
