The Actor
Director: Duke Johnson
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 1.0
Actor Paul Cole (André Holland) wakes up in the godforsaken state of Ohio with virtually no recollection as to how he got there, finds out he's actually from NYC but can't afford a bus ticket to head back, works at a tannery, meets (and "falls in love with") Edna (Gemma Chan) and finally does return home, but his mental condition interferes with his interactions with old friends. The "lost memory" plot (which was adapted from the book by Donald E. Westlake) is inherently cheap and this doesn't do a whole lot to compensate for that besides try to make it some kind of (Charlie Kaufman-produced) "dream movie" with its hazy visuals and free-flowing structure, although the approach becomes tedious rather quickly and it finishes off with a deeply unsatisfying conclusion. My guess is that Johnson wanted to use it as an examination of identity, with Cole "receiving his comeuppance" for being a philanderer, yet seeing him be repeatedly punished and humiliated for past misdeeds that he can't remember feels like watching a dementia patient getting slapped around.
