Oh, Canada

Director: Paul Schrader
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.0

Investigative documentarian (and draft dodger) Leonard Fife (Richard Gere in his later years, Jacob Elordi as a younger man) agrees to an interview by his former students Malcolm (Michael Imperioli) and Diana (Victoria Hill) even though he's dying of cancer, and some of the pieces of information he reveals - which may or may not be true - upset his (third) wife Emma (Uma Thurman).  This marks not only the second time Schrader's worked with Gere (the first being American Gigolo) but also his second adaptation of a novel by the late Russell Banks (who was a friend of his), but the result is a disappointment: nothing Fife says happened to him is really scandalous (a lot of males tried to get out of fighting in the Vietnam War) and he overcomplicated his love life although eventually settled down.  Schrader makes a mistake showing clips of Fife's work which don't look all that "special" and, while everyone tries, most of the performances do seem affected.  Or maybe the joke is that if America falls apart again (which is inevitable), there's one place to go ... that is, before Emperor #47 annexes it.
