Bridget Jones's Diary

Director: Sharon Maguire
Year Released: 2001
Rating: 2.0

Frustrated with being single in her early thirties, Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) tries to commit to a plan to cut down on her tobacco and alcohol usage and lose a bit of weight, then makes the mistake of getting involved with her boss Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), finds out he's a cheater, quits her job in publishing and starts working as a TV reporter, then slowly grows fond of (after initially hating) icy barrister Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).  Although it's a crowd favorite and quite financially successful (it's even spawned multiple sequels), I personally find this English rom-com (with an American actress) to be nauseatingly precocious, not to mention something of a relic: twenty-four years later (it's 2025) no employer can ever say "I like your tits in that top" to an employee (or send a spicy email) and not get him/herself in major legal trouble (those ... were the days?).  Jones is an utter dolt, but she still manages to land not one but two handsome suitors who are willing to actually engage in a fist fight partially over her (as well as past grievances).  As for Bridget smoking forty cigarettes a day and chugging shots of vodka: I'm fairly certain her and I went to college together.
