Mr. Majestyk
Director: Richard Fleischer
Year Released: 1974
Rating: 2.0
Colorado-based farmer Vincent Majestyk (Charles Bronson) hires a group of Mexican migrant workers, including union leader Nancy Chavez (Linda Cristal), to help pick his acres of watermelons but small-time thug Bobby Kopas (Paul Koslo) gives him a hard time and demands that his men work the land instead - the two of them get into a brawl, Vincent is arrested for assault and lands in jail, he meets and ends up on the lam with professional assassin Frank Renda (Al Lettieri), they fight with each other ... and later on Frank is determined to kill him. It's ironic this was released only twelve days before Death Wish because both of those movies basically follow the same template of "A Good Man Who Is Pushed Too Far" - here, it's less serious (notice the word "jest" is in the middle of Vince's surname) and quite goofy, as Renda's bloodlust gets in the way of common sense (try not to laugh when his flunkies machine gun the stockpile of fruit to bits). Despite multiple characters (even police officers) being blown away, this managed to secure a PG-rating - perhaps the review board was just full of Elmore Leonard fans?
