Paddington in Peru
Director: Dougal Wilson
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5
Marmalade addict Paddington Bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) receives a letter from the Reverend Mother (Olivia Colman), who runs a nursing home for older bears, that says his dearest Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) misses him terribly, so with his new British passport he takes his human family - consisting of risk-averse businessman Henry Brown (Hugh Bonneville), his wife Mary (Emily Mortimer) and their kids Judy (Madeleine Harris) and Jonathan (Samuel Joslin) - with him to his native country of Peru, where they're informed that Aunt Lucy has gone missing and they ask shady boat captain Hunter Cabot (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter Gina (Carla Tous) to find her. For this third film in the series, director Paul King has stepped aside (he's given credit for providing the story), and it's lacking a lot of the spontaneous silliness of the first two that kid audiences seem to have appreciated, and instead it feels like a couple parts of a streaming show stitched together. Many people think Paddington is adorable, but to me he's entirely too apologetic and sentimental, and his only "flaw" is that he can (unintentionally) bungle up any situation he's in ... compared to him, Winnie-the-Pooh is an actual philosopher (albeit one of the more depressive ones).
