Cool World

Director: Ralph Bakshi
Year Released: 1992
Rating: 0.5

Having served a decade-long sentence for murdering his wife, cartoonist Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne) is released from prison and quickly gets "absorbed" into his own comic book series, and while in there he falls in love with sultry Holli Would (voiced by Kim Basinger), they break the only rule of the land by having intimate relations, Holly transforms into a human ... and they're both chased down by Detective Frank Harris (Brad Pitt), a WWII vet.  The ultra-exaggerated "style," in which zany little creatures pop in and out of the screen randomly, tries to cover up the barely-there story by making it seem as if a lot is taking place, but the constant chaos actually becomes the equivalent of a nagging headache almost immediately, and the movie itself is preposterous and a waste of everyone's time.  Pitt himself has expressed displeasure over how it turned out ... although the "so bad it's good" revisionist crowd seems to have taken to it as the decades have passed: perhaps they, like the director, also find themselves attracted to 2D figures (which is definitely a choice).
