Let's Start a Cult
Director: Ben Kitnick
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.0
Way back in the 2000's, Chip Harper (Stavros Halkias) was the most dimwitted member of a cult run by William Davenport (Wes Haney) and frequently punished for his buffoonery so after he finds out they all took their own lives without him, he returns to his parents' house ... but when he spots William working as a clown and learns that he faked his death, Chip wants to reform the "group" and recruits new members. On the surface, the concept itself seems open for darkly comedic possibilities - considering the extreme right wing of the American political regime has been overrun by sycophants who worship a proto-fascist - but this fails to do anything memorable with it, turning it into a road trip with a few eccentric characters and leaving the majority of the one-liners to comedian Halkias, who co-wrote the "script." Fans of stand-up might enjoy spotting Stavvy's colleagues popping up in small roles, like Robert Kelly (as his father), Tom Papa (as a broadcaster) and Joe Pera (as a sex machine), but otherwise you'll need to be more blitzed than a Corona beer smoking a joint to make it semi-tolerable.
