My Old Ass
Director: Megan Park
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 2.5
Three teenage gal pals, Elliott (Maisy Stella), Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks), hang around Maude Island (in British Columbia) and decide to experiment with hallucinogenic mushrooms in the woods one night - while high, Elliott summons the 39-year-old version of herself (Aubrey Plaza) who offers her life advice (and tells her to be less of a jerk with her family), warns her to avoid getting romantically involved with intelligent farmhand Chad (Percy Hynes White) and then puts her number in her phone so they can stay connected. Although the "sci-fi"-adjacent premise is quite hokey - and it's never stated what kind of world older Elliott is living in - it's considerably wiser than most young adult-themed movies that have been released lately: Park, in her second feature film, remembers what it was like to be defiant and impulsive (and, in falling for Chad, she comes to the realization she's not exclusively a lesbian) and fully aware of how human existence can knock the joy out of you. The final reveal about Chad's ultimate fate may be a little cheap, but Elliott's younger self sticks with him anyway ... and knowing what happens will hopefully make her cherish the time with him all that much more. But what I want to know is: what does she get a Ph.D. in? If I had to guess, I'm going say it has something to do with agriculture....
