The Fabulous Baron Munchausen
Director: Karel Zeman
Year Released: 1962
Rating: 2.0
An astronaut named Tonik (Rudolf Jelínek) is having a nice walk on the Moon when he meets, among others, the teller-of-tall-tales Baron Munchausen (Miloš Kopecký) who offers to take him on a trip to Earth, starting with Turkey where Tonik falls in love with Princess Bianca (Jana Brejchová), they seriously annoy the the Sultan (Rudolf Hrušínský) and have to escape, get swallowed by a sea monster, make it to dry land and continue on their journey. The sets and the creature designs are all striking - considering the limitations the production team had in the early 1960's - but it, just as with many of Zeman's other movies, is considerably more interested in its appearance than the story or characters. It's whimsical instead of being genuinely enthralling, like watching a variety of fish swim around a tinted aquarium ... which might be appealing the first couple of minutes, but after time goes on you'll probably feel compelled to move to the next display case (although admittedly I have been known to stare at the jellyfish and seahorses for quite a while).
