Big Trouble in Little China

Director: John Carpenter
Year Released: 1986
Rating: 1.5

John Wayne-esque trucker Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) accompanies his "gambling buddy" Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) to the airport to pick up Wang's fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) and, while there, he meets attractive lawyer Gracie (Kim Cattrall) ... and then Miao is immediately kidnapped by henchmen for decrepit sorcerer Lo Pan (James Hong), who needs to marry a green-eyed woman to break a curse placed on him.  The "script," which is credited to Gary Goldman, David Z. Weinstein and W. D. Richter, is sub-comic book gibberish and Russell's asked to play an obnoxious blue collar tough guy, but for some reason I liked it a lot more when I was in grade school (I made a rough VHS copy for myself that I taped off of NY TV) which I think was because I thought Kurt was funny and I was into Chinese sword-and-fantasy movies at the time, and this makes an attempt to pay homage to them (sadly, its appeal has dissipated for me over the decades).  It wasn't exactly glowingly received upon release but has since acquired "cult status," which may be due to the fact that it (supposedly) influenced the popular video game Mortal Kombat (specifically the Raiden and Shang Tsung characters) ... and doesn't that floating meatball with multiple eyeballs remind anyone else of the Cacodemons from Doom?
