Evil Dead II
Director: Sam Raimi
Year Released: 1987
Rating: 3.0
Raimi followed up his cult classic 1981 splatter-fest with this sequel (of sorts): Ash (Bruce Campbell) goes to a cabin with his girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler), they "accidentally" play a recording from the "Book of the Dead," both of them become possessed by gnarly forest spirits, Ash lops off Linda's head with a shovel, his right hand tries to kill him so he has to remove that, and then he receives unwanted visitors: researcher Annie Knowby (Sarah Berry), her partner Ed (Richard Domeier) as well as locals Jake (Dan Hicks) and his lady friend Bobby Joe (Kassie Wesley). This has a little more of a "comedic" bent to it than the first one - Campbell's Three Stooges-esque physical comedy is commendable - and the stop-motion animation is still pretty good several decades later, even though it's quite a bit scant on narrative (or conversations) and essentially an exercise in directorial style (and groaning!). I originally saw this in the mid-90's on VHS, but somehow forgot about the unexpected ending in which Ash and his car are teleported back to the Middle Ages and he becomes a deity to the armored warriors: when guys say "I was born in the wrong era," I guess this is what they mean.
