The Wild Robot
Director: Chris Sanders
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5
Helper robot Rozzum 7134 (voiced by Lupita Nyong'o) - from tech company Universal (not General) Dynamics - washes up on the shore of a remote island and proceeds to try to be friendly with the local creatures (which they initially resist) and then she uncovers and protects a small goose egg, raises it with the assistance of loner fox Fink (Pedro Pascal) and gains the confidence of the forest ... but then her manufacturer picks her up and wants to remove her memories. Although it's nicely animated and contains many cute critters - I like the death-fixated opossum - this is an Iron Giant rehash except without any of the earned pathos or ingenuity, and it mainly contains cheap pleas for audience sympathy ... which should be easy, since the target crowd is grade schoolers. Sanders and his crew do sneak in a modern message, however: during a harsh winter, all the animals - predators and prey - are invited into a cozy den and ordered to set aside their differences and make an attempt to get along for their own safety: in today's America, it sounds a little too simple but we really could use a lot more empathy and sanity instead of division and hate.
