Simon of the Mountain
Director: Federico Luis
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 2.5
Intellectually challenged Pehuén (Pehuén Pedre) invites lonely Simón (Lorenzo Ferro) to be his friend and spend time with him and others with mental disadvantages even though there's technically nothing wrong with Simón, so when he gets kicked out of the group home and has to go back and live with his mother (Laura Nevole) and her boyfriend, Simón tries to "fake" having a disability. The very topic itself is extremely touchy to try to make work and director Luis does a fine job respecting the disadvantaged cast and understanding that, as human beings, they are still capable of having sexual feelings - Simón has a crush on spunky Colo (Kiara Supini) - except it's underwritten and seems half-finished. It's clear that the lead character isn't "making fun" of the disabled and does develop a bond with them, but it's never explicitly stated what's taking place in his mind or why, at 21 years of age, he doesn't just move out. The title is (supposedly) a reference to Buñuel's Simon of the Desert, but there isn't much of a connection to that, spiritually or otherwise....
