I'm Not Everything I Want to Be
Director: Klára Tasovská
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5
Biopic of Czechoslovakian photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková consists only of still images and narration from her diaries as she reminisces about various parts of her life, from being surrounded by Soviet Propaganda in Prague, to undergoing two abortions, having a miserable marriage, and then to her world travels to Tokyo as well as Germany, where she witnesses the Berlin Wall be taken down. Her output has been compared to Nan Goldin - particularly the pics she took of patrons of a "secret" LGBTQ+ club in Prague - and while a couple of her photos are interesting (they go by very quickly so feel free to pause and examine if you're watching this at home), the majority are not ... and the lingering sensation post-viewing is that the work is rather shallow, and that Libuše has an unhealthy obsession with herself (and this is pre-social media). Let's be honest: how many pictures can you take of yourself repeatedly (either clothed or not) appearing distraught before making others question your mental health - she mentions early on she was taking anti-depressants and then that's the last it's brought up - and that attempting to fill the hole of sadness with liquor is not recommended. But as of September 2024 she's still kickin', so that's nice to know....
