Blink Twice
Director: Zoƫ Kravitz
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 2.0
Tech developer Slater King (Channing Tatum), who has a history of "problematic behavior" (which he's had to apologize for), invites blue collar workers Frida (Naomi Ackie) and Jess (Alia Shawkat) to fly with him and his friends to a private island where they're given gift bags, their own rooms and everyone indulges in drugs (such as psilocybin and weed), but when Jess goes missing and no one else recalls her being there, Frida becomes suspicious as to what's actually happening. As far as directorial debuts go, I've seen significantly worse - Ms. Kravitz is surprisingly confident with her camera and, as an actress, knows how to communicate with the cast - except the middle section dawdles too much (it's a bit wearisome watching others indulge in various chemicals) and then it eventually reveals itself to be a #MeToo movie (that was cobbled together from recent releases like Get Out and The Menu), in which the Caucasian males turn out (as expected) to be gaslighting rapists. I'm not entirely sure it makes complete sense upon inspection - snake venom? magical perfume? - but one thing is certain: although he typically plays the protagonist, Tatum is an alarmingly effective villain.
