Greedy People

Rating: 1.0
Novice cop Will Shelley (Himesh Patel) has a rough start to his career in Providence, South Carolina: he's partnered with unethical chatterbox Terry Brogan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), responds to a call by feisty housewife Virginia Chetlo (Traci Lords) and accidentally kills her, he and Terry uncover a million in cash in her house ... and then they steal the money, try to place the blame on Virginia's masseur Keith (Simon Rex) and things become frantic. It's attempting to be this Coen Brothers/Quentin Tarantino mashup with its attempts at dark humor, but only feels like a lousy imitation, with two rather lame "hitmen," The Colombian (José María Yazpik) and The Irishman (Jim Gaffigan), Virginia's husband Wallace (Tim Blake Nelson) being less-than-remorseful over his wife's death and a lot of convenient happenings in which bodies just seem to pile up. The cast is fine - character actress Nina Arianda deserves a special mention as Deborah, Wallace's conniving mistress - but Patel's Shelley lacks any sort of charisma, and mostly gets lost in the manufactured cruelty.
