The Killer

Director: John Woo
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5

Lady assassin Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel) is sent on a job by her handler Finn (Sam Worthington) to a nightclub to execute some criminal scum involved in smuggling heroin but during the onslaught American singer Jenn (Diana Silvers) conks the back of her skull and goes blind - meanwhile, upstanding cop Sey (Omar Sy) is on the case and he forms a wary alliance with Zee.  This is a mostly in-name-only "remake" of Woo's well-regarded 1989 feature (starring Chow Yun-Fat) - he could have just called it Another Killer, which would have been fine - that's missing the spontaneity and intensity of that movie and instead turned into a somewhat tedious police procedural with some pretty unremarkable dialogue and only two semi-notable set pieces (Zee showing her skill with a sword she pulls out of her dress and the final shootout in a deconsecrated church).  Emmanuel might have opened the door for herself as a legitimate action star - while watching, I was reminded of La Femme Nikita - but I would hope future projects for her are a little more rigorously constructed: if the original was a ballet containing a plethora of bullets ... this is mainly a waltz.
