Problemista
Director: Julio Torres
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 2.0
Unable to land his dream career at Hasbro, Salvadoran toy designer Alejandro (comedy writer Torres, in his directorial debut) works at a cryogenics company (FreezeCorp) but is fired, and in order to remain in the United States he needs a sponsor so he starts helping out wildly aggressive Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton) who's trying to put together an art show for her late husband Bobby (RZA), whose main "subject" was painting eggs. It gets to be a little hard to take with the rampant "quirkiness" - sort of like Michel Gondry's films crossed with a Demetri Martin stand-up special, and Alejandro's "designs" are largely conceptual (not to mention unmarketable without tweaks) - and it's determined to make Swinton's dyed-hair art-world parasite as loathsome as possible, but it does a nice job highlighting the challenges for an immigrant to come to and stay in this country (without the Powers That Be threatening to deport them any day), and how resorting to doing sex work via Craigslist just to pay rent is dehumanizing. Torres' character is offered a chance to be trained as a paralegal although he ignores the offer - it makes sense with the way he wanted to conclude the movie, even though doing so would have benefited others in his situation.
