Guelwaar

Director: Ousmane Sembène

Rating: 1.5

Senegalese police officer Gora (Omar Seck) has a major problem to contend with when the corpses of political dissident Guelwaar, a Catholic, and Meyssa Ciss, a Muslim, get mistakenly buried in the wrong plots, and then he has to intervene with both religious groups when they become increasingly agitated over the situation and then things turn violent (which requires military intervention).  This is (supposedly) based on a true story, and while there are solid points presented about identity and corruption, the premise wears itself out roughly half-way through, and the very impassioned gentlemen really start to repeat themselves.  Perhaps it's my Western brain malfunctioning (as usual) but I got the feeling this could have been resolved considerably quicker than it is ... and although I respect Guelwaar's emphasis on self-determination, tossing away good food - if only to make a symbolic point - seems like a waste of resources.  To quote Brecht: "Grub first, then ethics."
