The Outfit
Director: John Flynn
Year Released: 1973
Rating: 2.5
Following his release from prison, bank robber Earl Macklin (Robert Duvall) is picked up by Bett (Karen Black), finds out his brother has been murdered and then he brings with him former partner Cody (Joe Don Baker) to get revenge against the title organization, which is run by Mailer (Robert Ryan) along with his creepy associate Menner (Timothy Carey). This is fundamentally a B-movie - it was adapted by Flynn from a work of genre fiction by Donald E. Westlake (writing under the pen name Richard Stark) - except loaded with a top-tier cast, and while it's lacking in creativity or depth it tries to compensate with a scrappy energy: Duvall darts around, makes threats, shoots people and manages to consistently escape. It doesn't exactly portray women in the most positive light - a woman falsely accuses Cody of attempted rape, a receptionist gets conked on the noggin', Black is slapped on a hotel bed and killed later on (in what's basically a "so what" moment) - but the fairest sex can't possibly hope to survive when being drowned in so much testosterone: the good guys - not gals - always win, correct?
