Mad scientist brings clay sculpture to life a la Frankenstein – it goes from being good to bad, causing panic in the closed society. Intense lighting and some inspired set design – nothing like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari but what is? – figure strongly in familiar concept (Wegener made several films of the same story, this being the last). The fact that the Germans made this about the Jews strikes me as a little unsettling (especially considering that a device resembling the Star of David powers the golem), but….
