Englishman John Morgan (Richard Harris) is in the United States with the purpose of hunting birds when he's captured by the Sioux, who beat him and tie him to a post (the winter months are especially rough) but as time goes on he earns their trust by killing invaders, then undergoes initiation rituals worse than any college fraternity and is finally allowed to take a bride.  While I believe it has noble intentions with respect to the history of the Native American population (subtitles would have helped, although Jean Gascon's Batise acts as a translator), it still turns into a White Savior narrative - hey, Caucasians are so amazing they can join a foreign culture and succeed! - and the second half is particularly belabored, even with the sequence in which Morgan is hoisted upwards only by hooks attached to his chest (it's on the poster).  Harris is a very capable lead, showing off his fortitude and defiance (he would return for two sequels), yet the movie itself is nothing notable appearance wise.  Fun personal fact: my father took my mother to see this on their first date.  They've been together over fifty years, but I wonder if he was trying to "test" her nerves early....
