A Family Affair
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5
Zara Ford (Joey King), who's in her early twenties and lives with her widowed mother Brooke (Nicole Kidman), works as a personal assistant to popular movie star Chris Cole (Zac Efron) and then quits when he becomes too demanding, so to "make peace" he visits her house, drinks a little too much tequila with Brooke and they start a relationship, which makes Zara quite upset, especially considering Chris' history of throwing women away. This is another Hallmark Channel escapee (it even includes a Christmas scene with fake snow!) that somehow landed on Netflix, albeit with a more esteemed cast (including two Academy Award winners) - it's an immediately forgettable rom-com and goes exactly where one expects it to, with Zara breaking them up, obtaining some sagely advice from go-for-it grandma (Kathy Bates), then coercing them back together. Efron's jaw may have expanded to almost superhero proportions, but he still hasn't lost his boy-next-door charm, and King's Zara is a bit of a stubborn brat ... although I suppose you need that moxie to be a Hollywood producer. Also: that New York set (in Los Angeles) does look like a dreamy first date spot....
