Sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) descend from a long line of witches - they're raised by their kooky aunts Frances (Stockard Channing) and "Jet" (Dianne Wiest) - and are informed of a family curse in which any man that falls in love with them will die a tragic death - ignoring this warning, Sally marries a grocer (and, predictably, he's hit by a truck) while Gillian decides to be promiscuous, except when she gets involved with violent and possessive Jimmy Angelov (Goran Višnjić), Sally has to rescue her. Tonally, it's a little all over the place, switching from light comedy to "supernatural horror" (one scene involves the ladies having to stick needles in Jimmy's eyes) to romantic drama involving investigator Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) and it doesn't quite gel - also, since the two leads have "special powers" (which are not specifically defined), they can never actually find themselves in "legitimate trouble" and can simply manipulate everyone into doing their bidding. Despite being a slight dud back in the late 90's, it's gained a cult following in the last twenty-six years, and that's most likely because it's about women "teaming up" to "save" a fellow female from a toxic relationship (Jimmy's a stereotypical "evil male") - Sally and Gillian have such a tight bond, too, that if they weren't biologically related some might wonder if they weren't, ahem ... romantically intimate (or maybe that's just my hyperactive imagination).
