Typical 80's teen movie with a few inventive digressions – John Cusack is the 'humorously psychotic' protagonist, trying to get his girlfriend back from the arms of someone much 'cooler' than him. The animated parts are silly and gratuitous, and a lot of the humor feels dated (compare David Ogden Stiers' character 'getting to know his son' and Eugene Levy's role in the American Pie movies). Incidentally, Trey Parker and Matt Stone re-used the plot to mock this movie (and 80's comedies in general) in the "Asspen" episode (#603) of South Park.
