The Idea of You
Director: Michael Showalter
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 2.5
Forty-year-old single mother Solène (Anne Hathaway), who runs an art gallery in Silver Lake, takes her teenage daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin) and friends to the Coachella festival where she has a chance encounter (in his trailer!) with Hayes (Nicholas Galitzine), the twenty-four-year-old lead singer of the boy band August Moon, and they form a strong connection ... which she tries to keep a secret from Izzy, her ex-husband Daniel (Reid Scott) and the world, but once the paparazzi catch up with it, their relationship becomes front page news. Although it follows a familiar "romantic movie" trajectory - they get together, break apart, reunite, etc. - the leads are believable (Solène still hasn't emotionally recovered from her divorce) and it does address not only the age gap between them but also the critical nature of today's social media: Solène's called a cougar, Izzy is humiliated and they claim Hayes has "Mommy Issues" (except it's his father that seems to have wounded him). It's adapted from the book by actress-writer Robinne Lee which was supposedly inspired by Harry Styles (which explains Hayes' choice of tattoos) ... but I couldn't help but think about actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his wife Sam (who is over two decades older than him) and all the drama surrounding their marriage. Sometimes love is love, and I'm sure over the years they've found plenty to talk about.
