Humane

Director: Caitlin Cronenberg
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.0

In some not-so-futuristic scenario, climate change has led to a decrease in necessary goods and the Canadian government has created the "Department of Citizen Strategy" (or D.O.C.S.) to address the issue, so former news reporter Charles (Peter Gallagher) and his chef wife Dawn (Uni Park) invite their family together - which includes Jared (Jay Baruchel), Rachel (Emily Hampshire), Ashley (Alanna Bale) and adopted son Noah (Sebastian Chacon) - to announce they are volunteering to euthanize themselves ... but when Dawn refuses to participate, D.O.C.S. (represented by Enrico Colantoni) demands another dead body.  Although the topic itself is timely, the treatment of it is poorly executed (despite Ms. Cronenberg's competent direction) - it's basically a stage drama that lacks both nuance and any understanding of how human beings think: the surviving group first gang up on one of their own, then somehow trick the officials into doing their bidding.  A few extra rewrites would have possibly been beneficial to explaining the global situation in better detail, and added a more satisfactory finale ... or maybe the "big joke" is that the wealthy get away with everything.
