Parachute
Director: Brittany Snow
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.0
Fresh out of rehab for her chronic eating disorder, Riley (Courtney Eaton) is warned to not get into a "relationship" for a full year but defies that order to start "hanging around" (and using) Ethan (Thomas Mann), who develops feeling for her that aren't reciprocated, and then she makes a countless series of mistakes (which she feels no remorse for). Actress Snow, in her directorial debut, admitted in a previous interview with The Independent that she's had past experiences with "anorexia, depression and self-mutilation," so this does come from a personal place, but Riley is an intolerable wreck who doesn't do anything to try to improve herself, engages in doomscrolling on Instagram to "compare" her body to other girls and repeatedly has emotional breakdowns over something someone says (or does) that doesn't "agree" with her. It takes approximately seventy-four minutes in for Riley's friend Casey (Francesca Reale) to finally rip into her, which is a little bit too late (and she still doesn't listen). Although it's never mentioned, perhaps an increase in the meds she needs to be taking would be helpful....
