France is at war with Germany, so several able-bodied males from Senegal are conscripted to fight in the conflict - a year later, French military leaders return to that same colony demanding they hand over their rice (to feed the soldiers), but the villagers resist ... and some of the elders turn to animal sacrifice (first a chicken, then a goat) to contact their gods for guidance. The scenario presented here is thin and repetitive and lacks the intellectual engagement of Sembène's best work - the women (and children) are forced to sit in the sun while the remaining men fruitlessly "debate" their next move, although there's nothing much to realistically do in the situation. It might have worked a little more effectively if it was a short or even medium-length film, and the (fully expected) conclusion is a bummer, as the fellows get mowed down by gunfire.
