Road House

Director: Doug Liman
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 2.0

This remake of the 1989 cult classic (starring Patrick Swayze and Kelly Lynch) changes quite a few details: former UFC fighter Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) is hired to "deal with" the rowdy crowd at a bar in the Florida Keys owned by Frankie (Jessica Williams) but realizes the problems with the establishment are weighed against him: real estate "developer" Ben Brandt (Billy Magnussen), on orders from his father (who is in prison), wants the property for himself and has multiple goons to try and break up the joint ... and that still doesn't factor in frequently nude menace-for-hire Knox (Conor McGregor, in his big screen debut).  Director Liman decided to take a slightly more "serious" approach to the narrative than the original - which completely embraced its silly side - and it's all the worse for it: to make the action scenes "pop" they overuse the CGI and it features an extensive "boat battle" where a yacht gets blown to pieces.  It's clear that Jake did the homework required for the role (not to mention the exercises), but the project needed to loosen its tie just a little bit, rip a throat out and remind itself it's so money and it doesn't even know it.
