Revenge of the Nerds

Director: Jeff Kanew
Year Released: 1984
Rating: 1.5

One of the more popular - and politically-incorrect - "raunchy comedies" of the 1980's: geeks Gilbert Lowe (Anthony Edwards) and Lewis Skolnick (Robert Carradine), complete with pocket protectors and glasses, go to study computer science at Adams College (which is really the University of Arizona) but are mocked and belittled by the beer-inhaling jocks from Alpha Beta, led by Stan (Ted McGinley) and Ogre (Donald Gibb) ... so they decide to start their own fraternity with their fellow outcasts (it should be noted there isn't a single moment showing anyone going to an actual class).  I watched a severely edited version of this on New York television when I was a kid - which removed all the nudity - and while there are some cheap chuckles to be had amidst the dorkiness (Gilbert and Lewis' "honking laugh" still makes me shudder) it mostly exists as a time-capsule from the era which (weakly) attempts to be a rallying cry for the "unpopular" kids to feel less alone.  A few modern reviewers have mentioned how installing security cameras in a sorority is a crime and the scene where an aggressive Lewis pretends to be Stan to seduce pretty cheerleader Betty (Julie Montgomery) can be classified as "rape by deception" ... but then again, their characters would later get married (so who said chivalry was dead?).  My favorite bit of trivia from this is that Matt Salinger, who plays the athletic Danny Burke, is the son of commendably elusive writer J. D. Salinger: raise high the roof beam, nerds....
