Bob Marley: One Love
Director: Reinaldo Marcus Green
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5
With his beloved birth country of Jamaica facing extreme violence due to "political issues," iconic reggae singer Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) plans a free concert but he's shot in his own house, so he and his team retreat to London (and see The Clash!), go on a successful tour and then return home for a memorable show where he brings opposing politicians on stage with him to try to encourage peace. It's a soundtrack movie, so naturally the music is superb, but unfortunately it follows the traditional biopic route: the band's record (Exodus) is a success and their concerts are profitable, but there's in-fighting as Bob gets into a heated arguments with his wife Rita (Lashana Lynch) and manager Don (Anthony Welsh) ... and then he's diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer on his hallux, which his doctor insists needs to be removed (tragically, Bob refuses to have this done). It also fails to explain the exact problems going on in Jamaica (aside from a few quick news clips) and discuss the core of the conflict - certainly more background details would have been helpful. But still, as I've written before with these types of biopics, if it convinces the kids to listen to the albums - via Spotify or YouTube or even (gasp!) purchasing vinyl - praise Jah.
