Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy

Director: Kelly Makin
Year Released: 1996
Rating: 2.0

The first (and, at this point in time, mostly likely only) full-length movie by Canadian comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall - consisting of Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson, all playing multiple roles (including the female ones) - is about the "discovery" of an antidepressant by the researchers at Roritor Pharmaceuticals that's released to the public without proper testing (under the name "GLeeMONEX") ... and while it's initially popular (and profitable), a major side effect is that it could turn the patient comatose.  I'll repeat what others have said and state that this doesn't remotely work as a feature - it's entirely too scattered and choppy - and even some members of the cast have issues with it, but there are individual moments that do linger in the mind, like McCulloch as both Glenn Danzig and Cancer Boy, Thompson's "sexually confused" husband and McKinney's suicidal father.  The TV series itself is pretty delightful with quite a few memorable skits, so those unaware of the group's output might want to take a glance at those before diving into this ... and yet the caution expressed regarding "miracle drugs" from Big Pharma remains relevant today: oh, oh, oh, Ozempic....
