Remember the Titans

Director: Boaz Yakin
Year Released: 2000
Rating: 2.0

With a lot of tension taking place in Alexandria, Virginia over the integration of black and white students, African-American football coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is hired to replace the popular Bill Yoast (Will Patton) and then is tasked with developing a bond between his mixed-race players (they have training camp at Gettysburg College, which allows for a convenient history lesson) but he still faces opposition from the community at large.  It provides a very Disney-fied version of racism - old rich men pull the proverbial strings, a brick gets thrown through a window, people refuse to shake hands, etc. - with a steady barrage of bigotry (slurs and prejudiced remarks are commonly uttered), but it's Washington's conviction and dignity that keep it watchable: his methods are frequently cruel (no water breaks during practice?) but he really is determined to win no matter what.  Little Hayden Panettiere is a scene stealer as Yoast's football-obsessed daughter, but what I'd like to remind everyone about is a woman's Tinder bio entry regarding Ryan Gosling's character that became a meme: "don't forget he was an absolute liability at cornerback"....
