Good Grief
Director: Daniel Levy
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 0.5
Illustrator Marc (Levy) sees his husband (and successful author) Oliver (Luke Evans) get killed in a car accident after leaving a Christmas party and spends several months in mourning, so he takes his friends Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel) on a vacation to Paris to stay at an apartment Oliver owned there (but never told him about) ... only for Oliver's "secret" boyfriend (and dancer) Luca (Medhi Baki) to show up. I was informed that Levy, making his directorial debut, was a gem on the Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek (which I haven't watched) but this could have used maybe a joke or a light moment to counteract the tone, which is an odious combination of smugness and condescension. The characters needed further development as well: Sophie is a loud mess, Thomas cannot stop whining and Marc is hopelessly self-absorbed, despite quickly finding a new love interest in seemingly kind Theo (Arnaud Valois). For future projects, perhaps Dan should resist being a downer and play to his strengths ... and properly devour that soup.
