Seventeen-year-old Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose) asks to become the apprentice of trained sorcerer King Magnifico (Chris Pine), who rules the Kingdom of Rosas and collects the residents' unfulfilled desires (in magical bubble form) yet refuses to grant any of them, but he rejects her, so she prays to the heavens for guidance and is sent an adorable little (non-verbal) star to help her liberate the trapped wishes.  The screenplay, credited to Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, spends most of its limited energy on the songs instead of the barely-there story, which is about as memorable as a two-line Hallmark card (except it's 95 minutes long) - there is homage paid to The Mouse's 100 year history with several references to its past, but that's certainly not enough to make this anything more than a mediocre pastiche.  I spent a bunch of time wondering if Magnifico is supposed to be Governor Ron DeSantis and his wife Queen Amaya (Angelique Cabral) is a stand-in for Ron's spouse Casey, but I somehow doubt that was at the forefront of anyone's minds....
