How to Have Sex
Director: Molly Manning Walker
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 2.0
Without parental supervision, sixteen-year-old friends Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce), Skye (Lara Peake) and Em (Enva Lewis) fly to the resort town of Malia in Greece to drink, sing karaoke and try to get laid - one night, Tara wanders away from her group, loses her virginity to aggressive Paddy (Samuel Bottomley), and then has an emotional breakdown. It's basically a gender-swapped teen movie from the 1980's with barely-there "characters" (the only thing the girls obsess over is sex) and a rather "traditional" message about how young ladies at that age shouldn't be left to their own devices and surrounding themselves with guys who are allergic to wearing shirts. What won it the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes, however, is the performance by Ms. McKenna-Bruce, whose facial expressions and body language reflect someone going through all of the feelings at once: she might trick you into thinking there's more there than what's actually written....
