Silent Night

Director: John Woo
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 0.0

A man named Brian Godlock (Joel Kinnaman) is shot in the throat, miraculously saved by surgeons and recovers, teaches himself how to fight and then, via flashback, the audience learns his son was accidentally killed by a gang and he wants revenge.  It's been two decades since Woo has directed an English-language movie (the previous one being 2003's Paycheck) and I wish he'd have returned with a screenplay longer than two index cards stapled together: there's almost no dialogue, it's completely implausible and the rank sentimentality somehow makes it even cheaper (the last scene made me actually laugh out loud).  I kind of wondered whether or not they were trying to appeal to the MAGA crowd - with its "upstanding Caucasian versus violent Hispanics" premise - but the filmmaker is hardly "political," so I don't think that fits....
