Dream Scenario

Director: Kristoffer Borgli
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 2.0

Evolutionary biologist Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage), who teaches at a small college, finds out he's been popping up in peoples' dreams, becomes a celebrity of sorts and even partners with an advertising firm run by Trent (Michael Cera) ... except when things change abruptly and those pleasant nocturnal experiences become graphic nightmares, he's turned into a pariah.  Fundamentally speaking, it's a one-joke movie and could have used further development (because it feels a bit lacking in substance), but Borgli's at least making at attempt to comment on both "cancel culture" and the nature of "memes," where someone is captured saying or doing something "different" and they become instant celebrities (two examples: the "Damn Daniel" kids and Nathan Apodaca riding a skateboard while jamming to Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams").  It probably needed to be helmed by a true fantasist to be actually effective, but Cage is very skilled at appearing consistently bewildered.
