Rotting in the Sun
Director: Sebastián Silva
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.0
Director Sebastián Silva (playing "himself") wants to take his own life (for whatever reason), so he goes to the beach, almost drowns, has a chance encounter with American social media influencer Jordan Firstman (also as "himself") and they plan on making a new television series together (called "You Are Me") ... but then there's an accident involving Silva and his klutzy housekeeper Señora Verónica (Catalina Saavedra). It has an anxious energy to it and unless you read the synopsis in advance you wouldn't know the "twist" was coming - where the movie literally shifts its tone into a crime story - but it's still too "film school-ish" with the overacting and manic handheld camera work, and I suspect (but can't prove) that much of the dialogue was improvised on the spot. Silva, who's currently 44 years old, is trying to be "edgy" with the hardcore gay sex and mentioned being "scared" that that's all people will talk about - I'm sorry, but anytime you put actual penetration on screen, it's going to get attention (because that's what was intended in the first place).
