Priscilla

Director: Sofia Coppola
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.0

While living in West Germany with her military family, 9th grader Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny) is introduced to popular singer Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi) who's been stationed there, the two have a "spark" but he leaves; years later they reconnect, she's invited to visit his home ("Graceland") in Memphis, they eventually marry and have a daughter (Lisa Marie), but then various problems with their relationship (infidelity, drug use, etc.) lead to divorce.  I can see what drew Coppola to the material - thematically speaking it does tie into previous works of hers - and the cast is fine, but this is a cold and joyless movie that will most likely alienate fans of the King of Rock and Roll: he's portrayed as a groomer, pill pusher and control freak who criticizes what Priscilla wears and even when they have sex ... and the height differences between the leads (Elordi is 6'5" and Spaeny is 5'1") makes her appear to be a child bride.  It's based on Priscilla's 1985 memoir about their life together (she's also listed as a producer), but I understand why Lisa Marie objected so strongly to it, as it depicts her mom as a helpless victim of celebrityhood.
