Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Director: Mel Brooks
Year Released: 1993
Rating: 2.0
Here is Mr. Brooks' parody of a quite famous story from the Late Middle Ages, so the names should sound familiar: brave Robin of Loxley (Cary Elwes) frees himself from prison in Jerusalem and swims back to Brittania, puts together a team of accomplices including Ahchoo (Dave Chappelle), Blinkin (Mark Blankfield) and Little John (Eric Allan Kramer), faces off against the crooked Sheriff of Rottingham (Roger Rees) and illegitimate Prince John (Richard Lewis) ... and winds up with lovely (and pure!) Maid Marian (Amy Yasbeck). It's all rather light and free-spirited, and the anachronisms (an Everlast Chastity Belt! The Club for horses! Reebok Pumps!) are clever, but unfortunately there are too many dry patches (the pacing could have used some adjustments) and the best moments, like Dom DeLuise as Don Giovanni and Brooks as Rabbi Tuckman (selling sacramental wine!), are unfortunately too brief. Mel would follow this up with the even more lackluster Dracula: Dead and Loving It before hanging up the director cap....
