Will Andrews (Fred Hechinger), the son of a minister, leaves the safe confines of Harvard University and travels to Kansas where he partners up with experienced mountain man Miller (Nicolas Cage) and his team to hunt for buffalo but they go overboard and kill too many, a winter storm traps them and they start to lose their minds ... and when they eventually return to town they're informed the hides are worthless.  The source novel by John Williams is well-regarded but you wouldn't know that by this rough "adaptation": it needed a more charismatic lead and the majority of "stylistic" choices are hugely questionable.  It's also not only wastes the presence of the idiosyncratic Mr. Cage (who's basically playing Ahab), but Xander Berkeley and Rachel Keller (who plays Will's "love interest") as well.  You can safely skip this and read the original work ... or, if Westerns aren't your thing, treat yourself to Williams' melancholy (but memorable) 1965 book Stoner.
