Saturn 3
Director: John Barry and Stanley Donen
Year Released: 1980
Rating: 1.0
Planet Earth is polluted and in need of food (no shocker there), so madman Captain Benson (Harvey Keitel) flies to a research station on Saturn's third moon where Adam (Kirk Douglas) and his (significantly younger) girlfriend Alex (Farrah Fawcett) are working on growing plants - Benson then introduces a gigantic robot (with a tiny head) named Hector, demands Alex become his lover and eventually Hector goes rogue. It's surprising how terrible this turned out to be despite having a solid cast, an experienced director (Donen replaced John Barry) and an accomplished screenwriter (British novelist Martin Amis is credited but others tinkered with it): there's just one stupid decision right after another and the dialogue is simply abysmal, plus it's strange to hear Keitel's voice dubbed by Roy Dotrice. The sole "redeeming" aspect - if you could call it that - is the production design, where the sets and outfits look appropriately "futuristic." But out of disaster comes opportunity: Amis took his experiences from being a part of this and used it to write his well-regarded novel Money: A Suicide Note.
