The Exorcist: Believer

Director: David Gordon Green
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 0.5

Thirteen-year-old Angela Fielding (Lidya Jewett), along with her schoolmate Katherine (Olivia O’Neill), perform a "ritual" to try to contact Angela's dead mother (who died in an earthquake in Haiti) but both of them become possessed by demons, so Angela's widowed father Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.) contacts exorcism researcher (and "legacy character") Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) for guidance.  While technically sound, it gets almost everything wrong from the very beginning story wise, failing to develop the characters in the slightest or explaining why the girls would be so desperate to tinker with the "dark arts" (instead of dancing on TikTok like everyone else their age) ... and then it doesn't attempt to be frightening, as the kids just ham it up with plenty of "Satanic effects" all around them.  The recently deceased William Friedkin was reportedly displeased with Green making this, but he has nothing to worry about: this will never be mistaken for the original.
