Lake Mungo
Director: Joel Anderson
Year Released: 2008
Rating: 1.5
Horror-influenced faux-documentary set in Ararat, Australia that goes over an accident back in 2005 where Alice Palmer (Talia Zucker) supposedly drowned in the title lake - family members, including Alice's brother Mathew (Martin Sharpe), her parents June (Rosie Traynor) and Russell (David Pledger) as well as friends and the authorities get interviewed ... and shows how her appearance keeps popping up in photographs taken in the area. Director Anderson gets part of the "technique" right - slowly zooming in on blurry images is surprisingly unsettling - but there are too many topics brought up (the "faked" pictures, Mat's bruising, Alice's involvement with the neighbor and his wife, her cellphone footage) that are never truly explored, so the latter half of the movie is hugely underwhelming. As with other Movies Designed for Midnight (or later!), you might want to find a way to turn off the thinking side of your noggin' and put on some headphones....
