A 21st century "update" to a classic novel by H. G. Wells: arrogant researcher Dr. Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon), with funding from the Department of Defense, develops groundbreaking technology that can make animals become undetectable to the eye and then decides to turn himself into the first human test subject - it's successful, but it drives him mad and he attacks his own colleagues, which include veterinarian Dr. Kennedy (Kim Dickens), ex-girlfriend Linda (Elisabeth Shue) and her new boyfriend Dr. Kensington (Josh Brolin).  The special effects are pretty impressive and hold up over two decades later, but I feel like it squanders a solid opportunity to actually explore all the possibilities the scenario presents instead taking the "easy route" of having Caine grope women and play pranks.  I'm not sure why it believes that making an individual "invisible" suddenly turns him into a rapist and mass murderer, but I doubt anyone involved gave much thought to its misanthropic angle.  For what it's worth, you can't really go wrong with Claude Rains in James Whale's 1933 adaptation ... but then again, that's so 20th century.
