Brewster McCloud
Director: Robert Altman
Year Released: 1970
Rating: 3.0
A completely gonzo picture, the way Lord Love a Duck was before it - and to which it owes a lot - about a young man (Bud Cort) who dreams of building wings and 'flying away' only to be grounded when he betrays his guardian angel and loses his virginity. It's Altman through-and-through, with plenty of running gags, half-heard insults, inside jokes and a detective who takes bird shit - and his job - very seriously. The apparatus Cort flies around in at the end looks a lot like the get-up Jonathan Pryce uses in his 'dreams' in Gilliam's Brazil ... only without the armor. Waldo Salt's daughter Jennifer has a hilarious role as one of Cort's 'girlfriends.'
