Shortcomings

Director: Randall Park
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.0

In the Bay Area, movie theatre manager Ben (Justin H. Min) is in a rocky relationship with Miko (Ally Maki), so when she accepts a three month internship in New York City, he uses the opportunity to date recent employee (and pee fetishist) Autumn (Tavi Gevinson) and then bisexual Sasha (Debby Ryan) ... but those don't work out so he flies out to visit Miko (and even brings her flowers).  The tone throughout is pretty smug and it's irritating watching a toxic jerk try to cheat on his partner ... only to realize she's a liar who's dating fashion designer Leon (Timothy Simons), which means they're both contemptible.  The sole redeeming character is Ben's lesbian friend Alice (Sherry Cola), who offers advice and seems to want to settle down herself which, as expected, Ben tries to ruin.  Despite pretending it has anything meaningful to say about the "Asian American experience" in America (box office hit Crazy Rich Asians is held in disdain), it comes across like an especially flaky knock-off of a Noah Baumbach film.
